What is it? A statewide community where practitioners from community colleges and universities share what’s working, what isn’t, and what comes next in digital credentialing.
Who convenes it? UMBC’s Division of Professional Studies. We organize meetings, run the email list, and maintain a shared archive of agendas, slide decks, and resources. Topics and speakers come from members.
Who can join? Anyone in Maryland working with digital credentials, microcredentials, or badges, from any institution.
About the community
The Maryland Digital Credentialing Community of Practice is an organic group of practitioners from across the state. We’ve met about monthly during the academic year since January 2024, and our most recent gathering was March 20, 2026. You may also see us under our earlier name, the Maryland Digital Badging Community of Practice.
Past sessions have included presentations from the University of Maryland Global Campus, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Montgomery College, the University of Maryland, College Park, Salisbury University, and 1EdTech, plus an in-person gathering at UMBC in August 2025.
The community is separate from the USM Alternative Credentials Task Force, though conversations in one can inform the other.
Our shared goals:
- Serve earners of digital credentials as effectively as possible
- Start by understanding each institution’s use cases
- Explore opportunities to collaborate across the state
What members want to talk about
When we planned the year ahead in August 2025, members raised dozens of topics. We grouped them into eight themes:
- Platform infrastructure and technology
- Policy and standards
- Process and workflow
- Learner experience and credential value
- Capacity building and training
- Engagement and partnerships
- Marketing, branding, and visibility
- Sustainability and resource planning
